27 Apr Bid to be capital of halal industry
SOME people may already know to jump on a train and head to Lakemba or Punchbowl for halal products.
But Canterbury councillor Karl Saich wants to take it a step further and make it the official halal capital of Australia.
At Thursday’s council meeting, he suggested the council present a report about ways it could assist and promote the local halal food industry.
“By promoting this business in Canterbury we invest more, we benefit the city,” Cr Saleh said after the meeting.
“People come from all over Sydney to get halal food. They not only buy meat but purchase (halal) products. Hopefully we can be the capital of the halal industry.”
He also welcomed input from the business community.
“I believe Canterbury should get priority for halal products,” he said.
Halal products are made in a way that means it is lawful for Muslims to consume them.
The council will view the report next month
